Connecting Essay 4

This above photograph was taken in my home town of Waltham Abbey, and includes the building of the Waltham Abbey Church, which is infamous in my town. The mixture of bull browns and greens contrast each other effectively within this image, as they're analogous colours. The lake in the foreground of the image has swans on it, these animals are considered innocent and peaceful; therefore, this mirrors the feelings portrayed in the viewer from this photograph. I chose to photograph my image at this angle in order to include both the lake, and the church within my image, moreover I wanted to be at a 'normal' height, meaning I was looking at this landscape from a civilian's view, and not from down low or up high which would be unrealistic. I also believe that in my photograph I captured the history of Waltham Abbey through the church and the old bridge which goes across the little lake. The sky is grey in this image, this could symbolise emotions like anger or confusion coming from above; many people assimilate the sky with God- therefore this could be viewed as being God's emotions.

The above piece of artwork is a painting, whom the artist was John Constable an English landscape painter. Constable often would paint the Dedham Vale area which surrounded his home. The greens and browns in this image compliment each other effectively, whilst also ceasing an 'earthy' appeal to the image, implying that this painter is at one with nature itself. Moreover, the reflective lake below implies the artist is asking the viewer to look at themselves, and question whether they're happy with who they are. This photograph emits the feeling to the viewer that this image is of a small town, as only fields can be seen in the background of the image, with one house in the foreground, and a lake.

Overall, both my image and Constable's link significantly as they're similarly both of British landscapes, and both mainly include dull greens and browns. Moreover, the angle at which both images are photographed as extremely similar, likewise to what is in both images is too  the same (e.g. a lake and a building.) A difference between the two images is that mine is a photograph, whereas Constables artwork is a painting. Additionally, both mine and Constable's images are similar as they both portray a dull, grey sky this is significant as it shows emotion of either the photographer/artist or the skies emotions itself.
